North Carolina didn’t leave Charlotte with a trophy, but it did take away something equally important in late May: answers.
Over three days at Truist Field, North Carolina defeated Virginia Tech 10-4 in the quarterfinals, crushed Pitt 13-5 in the semifinals, and then lost to Georgia Tech 13-6 in the championship game. The Tar Heels were challenged by two of the ACC’s strongest lineups, providing a preview of postseason play, where no game will be easy, as they will face either a team that made it to the postseason or a conference champion.
From a shaky weekend on the mound to a senior slugger’s breakout performance and multiple all-tournament selections, Carolina’s week in Charlotte revealed much about its potential, even if that potential remains to be fully realized.
Here are three takeaways:
Carolina’s starters struggled in Charlotte. Jason DeCaro, Ryan Lynch and Folger Boaz combined for 10 innings, allowing 12 earned runs, 22 hits and seven walks. Virginia Tech’s potent offense exposed some depth concerns for a deep postseason run.
However, these issues are relative, as Pitt and Georgia Tech are among the nation’s best lineups. If the Tar Heels continue hitting and playing solid defense, they won’t need flawless pitching—just strikes and smart management from Glauber and McDuffie. The offense seems postseason-ready after scoring 29 runs in three games, including a season-high 22 hits against Pitt.
The senior was clutch throughout the ACC tournament, batting 5-for-12 with three home runs and eight RBIs, earning all-tournament honors. His standout game was against Pitt in the semifinals, where he went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs.
Joining Relis on the list are shortstop Jake Schaffner and outfielder Owen Hull.
Schaffner went 6-for-12 with two doubles, two triples, a home run and four RBIs. Hull went 6-for-14 with a home run and eight RBIs. His best game was a 2-for-4 effort with a home run and three RBIs, during the tournament.
