And just like that, Denver Broncos players are on summer break.
After wrapping up organized team activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp, the Broncos are now off until training camp begins in late July. Denver coach Sean Payton was asked how he'd like players to spend the next few weeks after the team concluded minicamp.
“I think we’ll all routine-driven, those guys especially," Payton said. "They’ll have their workout routines, their conditioning routines. They’ll also, depending on the cities they go back to, [vacation]. More importantly, just being smart and appreciating the current team that we have and what the goals are.”
There was a time in the NFL when clubs used training camp to condition players for the season. Players are now expected to report to training camp in shape.
“Training camps used to be a lot longer, even before I got into the league," Payton said. "That ’06 training camp was like seven weeks, and so four preseason games. I think the period of time is shorter, shorter than it used to be, and the amount of practices. You’re not two-a-day every day. All of that has been reshaped, and for the better.
"I think that it changed in 2011. It’s incrementally changed, and our jobs are to adapt to it and then get our team ready to play within the framework of the rules and when we report. The on-ramping is different and it’s good. So I think there has been a progression.”
Denver's rookies are scheduled to report on July 22 and training camp practices will begin on July 28.
