There was a noticeable, but not completely unexpected absence from the start of Denver Broncos mandatory minicamp on Tuesday: pass rusher Jonathon Cooper.
The outside linebacker was not present for the beginning of a three-day minicamp, and coach Sean Payton confirmed that Cooper had been excused from the team. In his opening remarks on Tuesday, Payton issued a statement following Cooper's second arrest.
"Relative to Jonathon Cooper: We have excused him from this minicamp," said Payton. "He’s taking this time, obviously… He’s got to work on himself. The club is very much in tuned to the league office, local authorities here, and we’ve had several meetings. Clearly, from an ownership standpoint, head coach, organizationally… there’s a bar that we have, and an expectation that we have, that’s very high. We’ll consider all of that as we continue to gather the information. That’s really all I can tell you. I think it’ll take a little bit of time, but we’re continuing to go through that process, and we take it very seriously.”
Cooper's time with the Broncos now rests on very shaky ground, and if he does remain with the team, there is a looming possibility of league discipline.
Payton made it clear that the Broncos will wait for the legal process to play out before making any further remarks. “I don’t want to comment any more on that," Payton said. "I don’t think it’s my place to comment any more right now because, obviously, it’s a pretty significant issue. So I’ll try to say that again: I don’t want to. Respectfully, I understand the questions.”

Cooper has a motion hearing set for his first arrest on July 6, followed by a jury trial hearing on July 22. He also has a motions hearing for his second arrest set for July 14. The Broncos will continue minicamp through Thursday.
