Sam Amick: A quick Rick Adelman story that’s worth sharing… The late, great Marty McNeal was one of the only reporters who Rick trusted during his time with the Kings (he was the beat writer). So one day, when I’m a mid-20s backup beat writer who has no clue what he’s doing, I make the mistake of sharing something Rick told Marty with one of our editors at The Sacramento Bee.
This got back to Marty, who ripped me a new one for breaching the confidence of someone who was already wary of media. It was a teaching moment that always stuck with me, and was rooted in Rick’s choice to be very discerning about who he let in. He was extremely private, but those who knew him best absolutely loved him.
