HARTFORD – Neither team had made it to the state championship game before. Both wanted to get to the Mohegan Sun.
The Enfield and Rocky Hill girls basketball teams had played each other twice – the first game of the season and in the semifinals of the CCC tournament – and Rocky Hill had won twice. But that didn’t matter Monday night at SMSA.
Rocky Hill hung on to win in overtime, with junior Jill Rhouddou hitting one of two free throws with 6.4 seconds left, 49-48, to beat No. 4 seeded Enfield in the Division II semifinal game.
Rocky Hill (25-2) will face the winner of Tuesday’s Bristol Central-Staples game in the championship game at Mohegan Sun either Saturday or Sunday at a time to be determined.
“We’ve been here before,” Rocky Hill coach Pete Asadourian said. “We’ve been in battles. We’ve faced adversity all season, that’s something this team can handle is adversity. We told them, ‘No quit. No quit, no quit, no quit.’ We have four seniors and they want it. They want it bad.”
Senior Katherine Harding led the top-seeded Terriers with 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Junior Isabella Tucker hit a 3-pointer, her only field goal of the game, with a little over a minute left to put Rocky Hill up 48-46.
Enfield tied the score at 48 on an Arabella Herron jumper with 46 seconds left but Rhouddou was fouled and her free throw ended up being the game-winner. Enfield had a chance for a shot with 3 seconds left but missed.
Kara Hosig led Enfield (22-5) with 18 points and Herron had 11. Rocky Hill defeated Enfield 69-58 on Dec. 16 and 58-38 in the CCC semifinals.
“Obviously, they wanted to get to Mohegan Sun as much as we do,” Harding said. “I knew it was going to be hard. But I had confidence. I knew our team could make it.
“Us four seniors have been playing together for so long, it means so much for us to get this far together.”
Enfield jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first quarter but Rocky Hill had been down before. The Terriers fought back and tied the score at 22 late in the second quarter on a Harding 3, but Enfield’s Kendall Coffey scored the last five points and the Eagles took a 27-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
“We knew it was going to be a hard game coming in,” Rocky Hill senior point guard Kelsey LaMay said. “We knew what they do. They can knock down shots. It just came down to defense.”
Rocky Hill took the lead with a 10-2 run to open the third quarter but Enfield rallied and the Terriers led 40-38 heading into the fourth after Arianna Daley hit a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter. Hosing hit a 3 with two minutes left; Harding answered with 3 20 seconds later to tie the score at 45 and that’s how it ended a minute later in regulation.
Hosig hit one of two free throws with 1:41 left to put Enfield up 46-45 before Tucker connected with her 3-pointer.
“Enfield’s good,” Asadourian said. “They’re here for a reason. We beat them two times already. We had that in the back of our heads, and I know what (Enfield) coach (Jay) Gaucher was saying to them, ‘Go get these guys. Nothing to lose.’
“But we had two tough battles – (a 65-60 win over) New London and (a 63-51 win over Notre Dame) Prep – and that marinated us for the rest of our journey.”
