With a trip to the World Cup semifinals on the line, Belgium suffered a deflating injury.
In the 67th minute of Friday's quarterfinal matchup against Spain with the score tied at one goal apiece, Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois suffered an apparent injury while making a save. Though Courtois returned to his feet and tried to continue, he was subbed out of the game just a few minutes later and was emotional as he jogged off the pitch.
It was a tough blow as Belgium looks to return to the semifinals for the third time ever and the first time since 2018. Courtois, who plays for Real Madrid, is competing in his fourth World Cup for Belgium this year.
The 34-year-old has started all six games in goal for Belgium and has 14 saves so far in the tournament.
With Courtois exiting the game, Belgium turned to 24-year-old Senne Lammens. The Manchester United goalkeeper's senior career began in 2025, and he's making his World Cup debut. Lammens had a rough introduction as he ultimately allowed a go-ahead goal to Spain in the 88th minute.
