Tigers Lose The Series to the Yankees

The Tigers had chances Wednesday night at Comerica Park, but the Yankees’ power against Tarik Skubal and a few missed scoring opportunities were enough to decide a 4-2 loss before Houston comes to town for a four-game series.

Skubal still generated plenty of swing-and-miss, but New York got to him with three home runs, two from Paul Goldschmidt and one from Jasson Domínguez. That was the difference in a game where the Yankees scored all four of their runs on long balls and Detroit could not produce enough against Ryan Weathers and the bullpen.

Goldschmidt jumped Skubal immediately, leading off the game with his 13th home run of the season on a fly ball to left. Skubal settled in after that, getting Ben Rice to ground out, striking out Domínguez and covering first on a grounder from Cody Bellinger to end the first.

The Tigers answered in the second. Spencer Torkelson doubled to left, Hao-Yu Lee walked, and after Ben Malgeri struck out, Zach McKinstry lined a single to center to score Torkelson and tie the game at 1. Detroit had a chance to extend the inning, but Jake Rogers struck out to leave two aboard.

Goldschmidt gave New York the lead back in the third with his second home run of the night, this one to left center. It came with two outs after Austin Wells struck out and Max Schuemann flew out. Skubal struck out Ben Rice after the homer to limit the inning to one run, but the Yankees had a 2-1 lead.

The middle innings were where Skubal looked more like himself. He struck out Domínguez and Bellinger in a clean fourth, then struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. and José Caballero to open a perfect fifth. Through five innings, the issue was not traffic. It was that the damage New York did create left the park.

Detroit tied the game again in the fourth. Torkelson walked, Lee singled to right, and an error by Domínguez allowed Torkelson to move to third and Lee to advance to second. Malgeri followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Torkelson and tying the game at 2. With Lee at third and one out, the Tigers had a chance for more, but McKinstry struck out and Rogers flew out.

That missed chance showed up later.

The Tigers had another opportunity in the fifth when Kevin McGonigle led off with his 18th double of the season, a sharp fly ball to center. Dillon Dingler followed with a fielder’s choice to the pitcher, with McGonigle thrown out at third. Matt Vierling then lined out sharply to center, and Riley Greene also lined out to center. Both balls found Max Schuemann, who helped Weathers get through the inning without damage.

Schuemann’s defense in center was a quiet part of the Yankees’ win. He handled McGonigle’s double when Detroit did get one over him, but he also took away damage by catching Vierling’s sharp liner and Greene’s lineout in the fifth. In a close game, those plays mattered because Detroit had the top of the order up with a runner already in scoring position to start the inning.

The final swing against Skubal came in the sixth. He struck out Schuemann and Goldschmidt to begin the inning, but Rice singled to right. Domínguez followed with a two-run homer to left, his third of the season, giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead. Skubal finished the inning by getting Bellinger to pop out, but the Yankees had the only separation they needed.

Detroit’s offense had baserunners after that, just not enough production. Lee singled in the sixth, but Malgeri struck out and McKinstry lined out. Rogers walked to start the seventh, but McGonigle popped out and Dingler grounded into a force out. Kerry Carpenter came off the bench to pinch-hit after a brief substitution sequence, but he struck out against Fernando Cruz to end the inning.

In the eighth, Greene singled to right to begin the inning against Cruz, giving the Tigers the tying run at the plate with no outs. Torkelson struck out, Lee struck out and Malgeri struck out, leaving Greene at first. That was the last real push before David Bednar worked the ninth. McKinstry struck out after an ABS challenge confirmed the pitch, Colt Keith grounded out, McGonigle singled to right and Dingler flew out to Domínguez to end it.

The bullpen gave Detroit a chance to stay close. Jacob Waguespack replaced Skubal in the seventh and threw a scoreless inning. He worked into the eighth, and after Schuemann was hit by a pitch and replaced by Spencer Jones, Enmanuel De Jesus came in and helped finish the frame. De Jesus then worked through the ninth, allowing a Bellinger double but keeping the Yankees at four runs..

Houston comes to Comerica to kick off a four-game series starting on Thursday.
