Casey Mize Impresses in the Bronx

Casey Mize gave the Tigers one of his best starts in the majors, and A.J. Hinch reached a personal milestone in the process.

Mize worked seven scoreless innings, allowed one hit, walked nobody and struck out a career-high 10 as Detroit beat the Yankees, 7-3, at Yankee Stadium. The win was also the 1,000th of Hinch’s managerial career, giving the night an extra note beyond the final score.

Mize’s final line was sharp from start to finish: seven innings, one hit, no runs, no walks, 10 strikeouts and no home runs allowed. He improved to 3-5 and lowered his ERA to 2.63. The strikeout total stands out, but the cleaner part of the outing was the lack of traffic. New York had only one hit against him, Spencer Jones’ double in the third, and Mize never allowed the Yankees to build a real inning.

Detroit gave him support early. In the first, Dillon Dingler doubled to left, moved to third on a passed ball and scored when Spencer Torkelson singled into center. The Tigers added four more runs in the second. Zach McKinstry singled, James Outman followed with a single, and Matt Vierling reached on a throwing error that brought McKinstry home. Dingler added a sacrifice fly, Kevin McGonigle singled, Torkelson walked and Hao-Yu Lee followed with a two-run single to left, pushing Detroit ahead 5-0.

That was more than enough for Mize. He struck out Ben Rice and Paul Goldschmidt in the first, then got Jazz Chisholm swinging in the second. After Jones doubled in the third, Mize struck out Austin Wells, then got José Caballero and Rice to end the inning. From there, he continued to control the count and avoid hard contact. Chisholm left the game after he and Jasson Domínguez collided with each other in the 4th.

The Tigers added two more in the fourth. Vierling singled, Dingler reached on an error by Cody Bellinger, and McGonigle lined a two-run single to left to make it 7-0. McGonigle finished with three RBIs, Lee drove in two, Dingler had a double and a sacrifice fly, and Torkelson opened the scoring with his RBI single.

Mize’s finish was the best part of the start. He struck out the side in the sixth, getting Wells, Caballero and Rice. In the seventh, he struck out Goldschmidt for his ninth strikeout, then got Oswaldo Cabrera looking for No. 10. He completed seven innings on a night when the Tigers did not need to push their bullpen too hard early.

The eighth inning did make the final score tighter. Drew Sommers entered and allowed a walk, a double and a three-run homer to Amed Rosario. Sommers recovered to strike out Caballero and Rice, and Drew Anderson handled the ninth with a clean inning.

For Hinch, win No. 1,000 came in a fitting type of game for this version of the Tigers: strong starting pitching, early offense and enough from the bullpen to close it out after rough weekend against Houston.
