The Boston Red Sox made some loud noises at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, as they swung a huge trade to land Baltimore Orioles star catcher Adley Rutschman.
However, the 28-year-old backstop is not going to be readily available in games for the Red Sox, as he is on the 10-day injured list with a wrist issue. It remains to be seen when he will be able to make his debut in Boston threads, but Red Sox general manager Craig Breslowdoes not seem to be too worried about the catcher’s availability.
“Craig Breslow said Adley Rutschman (left wrist injury) is ‘optimistic’ and feeling better, but Breslow declined to estimate when he would return since the Red Sox’ medical staff hasn’t worked with him yet,” Tim Healey of the Boston Globe shared via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.

Rutschman has not seen action since a July 18 Orioles game against the Houston Astros on the road. He had a terrific start to the 2026 season, posting a .912 OPS in March and then slashing .378/.404 /711 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 45 games in April. He hasn’t posted a monthly OPS better than .717 since, but he’s definitely still a huge addition to the Red Sox, who are surging in the second half of the 2026 campaign.
In the transaction between American League East rivals, the Red Sox sent minor league right-handers Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon, minor league outfielder Enddy Azocar, catcher Carlos Narváez and a player to be named later to the Orioles in return for the three-time All-Star Rutschman.
