Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride isn't on the trade block, but CBS Sports' Garrett Podell believes the All-Pro could eventually become a player worth monitoring if Arizona fails to turn the franchise around.
In a recent look at NFL stars who could potentially seek a fresh start, Podell examined McBride's long-term outlook with the Cardinals. His conclusion was simple: if Arizona can find its quarterback of the future, McBride likely stays. If not, the conversation could become much different as the organization continues to rebuild.
McBride has developed into one of the NFL's most productive pass catchers regardless of position. He finished the 2025 season with 126 receptions, the second-most in the league, while adding 1,239 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns. Despite those numbers, the Cardinals stumbled to a 3-14 record while playing in an NFC West that featured three 12-win teams.
Podell believes Arizona still has time to avoid that scenario. McBride remains under contract through the 2027 season after signing a four-year, $76 million extension, giving the Cardinals an opportunity to address the quarterback position before frustration has a chance to grow. According to Podell, landing a top quarterback prospect in the 2027 NFL Draft could be enough to keep the star tight end committed to the franchise.
While Tampa Bay has no immediate need at tight end after extending Cade Otton, situations involving elite talent are always worth following. Offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has shown a willingness to utilize multiple tight ends, and a player with McBride's ability as both a receiver and matchup weapon would fit into virtually any offense in the league.
There is no indication that Arizona is interested in moving McBride, nor does Podell predict a trade request is imminent. However, if the Cardinals continue to struggle over the next two seasons, his future will be one of the more intriguing storylines to watch, and contenders around the league, including the Buccaneers, would almost certainly pay attention.
