Podcasts are so huge, so thought I'd create a thread for recommendations/discussion.

Right now, I have two that I'm listening to/watching on Youtube.

Good Hang with Amy Poehler
- basically just Amy hanging out with celebrities and they just talk about stuff. Nothing over the top. Her episode with Aubrey Plaza is pretty funny.
xc_hide_links_from_guests_guests_error_hide_media

Dropping Names with Brent and Jonny
- This is a brand new podcast, and this episode is a must watch:
xc_hide_links_from_guests_guests_error_hide_media
Basically Riker and Data from ST interviewing Mal and Wash from Firefly

If anyone likes Hollywood history, this is the best podcast I've found that talks about it:

That’s a good one.

Blank Check is my favorite Hollywood pod. It’s set up where they focus on one director for basically a series where each episode is a deep dive into a Director’s filmography, 1 movie per pod… basically Directors who had a one huge smash early in their career and then have been given a blank check to do whatever they want moving forward and determining if those checks cleared or bounced, ie were their movies moving forward successful or not.

The Why Files has started doing their Basement podcast series. Anyone who has worked graveyard before or suffered from Insomnia has to be aware of Art Bell and Coast 2 Coast AM. The Why Files is basically the modern version of that show dipping into strange stuff like aliens, paranormal, cryptids, and conspiracy lore. The host, AJ, is great also. I'm enjoying the new podcast format since they have guests.

Love the Why Files but not a fan of these interviews or the campfire episodes. AJ needs to get back to doing real episodes. There's only been two so far this year.

Just click the link and let it play. You can also download ths Spotify app and search "Why Files" or search on Apple Music/the iTunes store. I normally listen through the Spotify app myself but will Youtube a lot as well. I have both on my TV.

I have a question about podcasts. I've only listened to snippets of just a few. A bunch of episodes are an hour or longer.

Do you listen to each episode at once or on stages? And then if you do break it up do you ever feel like you are ever "behind on the podcasts"?

They seem to demand a lot of time. Do you have to sacrifice other time to stay up to date?

I listen to them while in the car for the most part, so by definition that would be broken up. If you make long car trips to work, for example, they can be a great distraction.

Do you listen to audiobooks? The concept is similar.

Ahhh. That makes sense. Yes I listen to Audible everyday for about 50 minutes to and 50 minutes back from work.

Most episodes can fit in that time frame depending on the pod.

Pretty much every subject is available. It's crazy how many there are.

I turn them on in the background often rather than music or standard tv. I know with YouTube and Spotify you can play them sped up also, like 1.5 or 2 times the normal speed, so you can get through a 2 hour podcast in 60 or 80 minutes, which makes a big difference. It also helps keep your attention because some people talk slow and you can find a speed to absorb the information while staying engaged.

It depends on the topic or show if I do it in one go or not. Some I'll break up but the vast majority aren't serialized like TV so missing an episode doesn't hurt. It all depends on how engaged you are and why you listen to that show if you want to pick it up after listening to half and stopping.

Definitely agree with Chap that it's a lot like an audiobook. A mix of audiobook and AM radio, is how I'd describe most podcasts.

Different pods for different uses. Super long pods that I love listening to can make what should be a really long drive feel like a breeze.

Hour long pods good for walks/gym.

Very few of my favorites require listening to immediately or quickly. Most of them are historical in one way or another so they’re pretty evergreen for timing purposes.

When I road trip by myself, I do my audiobooks. But this is a great idea. When my wife and I traverse, we usually just listen to nothing or Yacht Rock on SiriusXM. This would be a cool way to listen to something together.

What platform do you use to listen to them? Something like YouTube, Spotify, etc?

There have been a few podcast threads on here. I mostly listen to true crime, like Crime Junkie. A couple that my friends have done about the fair industry. And a Star Wars one called Full of Sith.

Spotify so long as you aren't on the free plan. Some pods aren't available and also the ads are super annoying.

Spotify has 90% of the shows I like. If you listen at home or when you can also watch there is video for a fair number of bigger pods on Spotify as well.

I only do it to kill the long solo trips, like when I used to shuttle between LA and Phoenix a lot while my Mom was sick.

Actually can’t imagine doing it with someone else in the car, personally. I think I’d get annoyed if someone started talking during a deep dive. That’s oddly my moment to just kind of zone out, lock in to the story and not have to think about the world.

Nah… just whatever the thing on my iPhone default is (I’m obviously very tech advanced!)
