It’s certainly been a very queer 2026 Olympic Games, and the trend will continue with the gold medal women’s hockey game scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
When Teams USA and Canada face off against one another during the women’s hockey final, there will be a record-setting nine out LGBTQ+ women on the ice, per Outsports, which has been closely tracking the queer and trans athletes at this year’s games. The match will feature six queer Canadian athletes and three out Americans.
The queer women on Team Canada’s women’s ice hockey roster include Erin Ambrose, Emily Clark, Brianna Jenner, Emerance Maschmeyer, Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey. Each of the athletes featured in the game are returning Olympians, with Ambrose and Maschmeyer both being two-time Olympians, Clark and Stacey having competed in three Olympics. Jenner has four under her belt, while Poulin has a whopping five.
Meanwhile, Team USA’s queer roster includes Cayla Barnes, Alex Carpenter, and the newly engaged Hilary Knight. This is both Barnes’ and Carpenter’s third Olympics, as well as Knight’s fifth. Knight also serves as the captain for Team USA.
The rematch between Team USA and Team Canada is one of the Olympics’ most highly anticipated competitions. Since women’s hockey was introduced as a sport at the international sporting competition, only Team USA or Team Canada have walked away with gold medals, per ESPN. Team Canada has won five of the seven gold medals since 1998 and are the most recent winners, having trounced Team USA in Beijing’s 2022 games.
Per ESPN, Team USA is the favorite to take the gold medal this year: they’ve outscored opponents 31-1 so far and have made at least five goals in each of their games. They’re entering the match against Canada having won with five straight shutouts, one of which was against Canada.
The match will take place today at 1:10 EST, per the Olympics schedule. Make sure to tune in: who knows when ice will ever be this gay again? (Well, at least until 2030.)
