Notre Dame football got great news from the NCAA on Tuesday night, as they ruled in favor of an Irish player who was seeking his sixth-year of eligibility.
Defensive lineman Jason Onye had petitioned for an extra year, and the NCAA decided to grant him it as reported by On3’s Eric Hansen. The now super-senior had played parts of the last four seasons, but in 2022, he only saw the field for one game. The NCAA deemed that it was such a small amount of playing time that he was given the extra season.
While Onye isn’t a star, he’s more than a solid contributor that will help the Irish’s depth along the defensive line. During his Notre Dame career, he has 52-tackles and 3.5 sacks, having both 1.5 each of the past two seasons. While Onye’s return isn’t considered a player addition, it’s a big ruling that will benefit the Irish in the 2026 season.
