The San Antonio Spurs have one of the most unique superstars in the NBA. On the court, Victor Wembanyama stands at 7-4, but has a tight handle and incredible shooting accuracy and confidence. He's already the best player in the league at only 22 years old, and will only get better.
Off the court, he enjoys chess, reading, and is apparently in bed by 10 PM on nights the Spurs don't play. His dedication to his craft is second to none, and his dedication to his team is just as intense.
Last week, the Spurs signed him to a $251 million max contract. However, he left $50 million on the table, turning down individual performance incentives and giving the Spurs some added flexibility.
For him, it was an easy choice.

Other legendary players have taken voluntary pay cuts so their team can build around them. Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Dirk Nowitzki are all relevant examples. However, they made those moves to extend their primes and had already signed massive deals early in their career.
Never before has a player so young turned down a supermax in favor of team success.
The last player to take a pay cut anywhere near the size of Wembanyama's was Jalen Brunson in 2024. The New York Knicks' superstar signed a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension as soon as he could, rather than waiting a year to sign a potential five-year, $269.1 million deal.
As Brunson celebrated a championship after beating the Spurs in five games, Wembanyama knew he'd have to take a similar route.
"He wants to be the best player of all time," summed up ESPN's Tim MacMahon. "He wants to fulfill every ounce of his immense potential. That's going to require winning multiple championships. And so I think he deserves praise for prioritizing winning over maximizing his paycheck. He just watched Jalen Brunson do the same thing and celebrate the championship right on Wemby's home floor there in San Antonio."
Brunson's sacrifice allowed the Knicks to trade for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, even after adding OG Anunoby. Wembanyama is hoping the Spurs will be able to lock up Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper long-term, and then still have enough left over to build an excellent supporting cast.
If the rest of the Spurs follow Wembanyama's lead, then it won't be long before the Spurs are back in the Finals.
