The Golden State Warriors won against a conference rival on Tuesday night but it was not without a little help from the opposing Sacramento Kings.
Golden State defeated Sacramento, 110-105, which put the Kings tied for the worst record in the Western Conference. With a little over three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Kings were leading, 101-100.
Sacramento head coach Doug Christie then decided to have Doug McDermott intentionally foul Golden State, and Seth Curry took a trip to the free-throw line. Many, including The Ringer's Bill Simmons, were baffled and demanded attention from the league.
It was a bizarre sequence to watch and did not exactly make much sense in the flow of a basketball game.
After the game, Golden State forward Draymond Green discussed what he saw on the possession.
Here is what Green said:
Green suggested that the league fine the organization for this decision, noting that's what they do to the players.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Kings are indeed under investigation but deny any wrongdoing:
Christie told reporters that tanking is the "last thing" he would too because he respects the game "too much" to hurt the players, per ESPN.
The league is currently weighing options to resolve late-season tanking efforts. It remains one of the most prevalent problems in the NBA.
While several teams are potentially worthy of this criticism, this is one of the most notable examples of potential in-game decision-making seen yet.
