Max Muncy hit five home runs in 245 plate appearances in parts of two seasons with the Oakland A’s before signing a minor league contract with the Dodgers, hit 12 home runs in 110 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City in his first year in the organization, and didn’t debut with the Dodgers until he was 27 years, eight months old.
Nobody has hit more home runs at Dodger Stadium in the 65-year history of the ballpark than Muncy.
Muncy hit his 130th regular season home run at Chavez Ravine on Tuesday night against the Mariners, tying Eric Karros for most in the ballpark’s history.
It’s been a milestone kind of season for Muncy, who last week surpassed Ron Cey for fifth-most home runs in Dodgers franchise history. At 230 home runs, Muncy is only 12 behind Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella for fourth place. The only player with more Los Angeles Dodgers home runs is Karros, with 270.
Sure, Muncy plays in a more homer-happy era than Karros did, with 1.03 home runs per team game across MLB from 1992-2002, the full seasons for Karros in Los Angeles, with one home run hit every 37.6 plate appearances leaguewide. Since 108, MLB teams average 1.19 home runs per game, with one homer every 31.7 PA.
But the current Dodgers third baseman has batted 1,982 total times at Dodger Stadium, a mere 61.8 percent of the 3,209 plate appearances at the ballpark by Karros. Also, Muncy has been one of the best power threats in baseball since joining the Dodgers, his ..230 home runs ranking 12th in the majors since the start of 2018.
Muncy is one of only three players to hit three home runs in a game at Dodger Stadium more than once, along with Dave Kingman (and his performance) and Corey Seager. Muncy’s first three-homer game was May 4, 2024 against the Atlanta Braves, and his second was April 10 this year against the Texas Rangers, joining Don Demeter — in 1959 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum — as the only Dodgers to finish off a three-homer game with a walk-off shot.
That home run to beat Texas in April was Muncy’s fifth career walk-off home run, two shy of Andre Ethier’s stadium record of seven.
One of those walk-off shots for Muncy ended the longest game in MLB postseason history, the 18th-inning home run to beat the Boston Red Sox in Game 3 of the 2018 World Series, ending a contest that lasted seven hours, 20 minutes.
Muncy is the Dodgers’ all-time postseason leader with 16 home runs, and his seven hit at Dodger Stadium is second-most in the postseason in ballpark history, one behind Shohei Ohtani.
Counting the postseason, Muncy has already passed Karros in total home runs hit at Dodger Stadium, with a select group of only seven players to hit triple-digit home runs in the ballpark’s history.
