Since the Detroit Red Wings will have no first round pick this year at the NHL draft, Detroit Hockey Now has suggested the timing may be right to pick the best available center in second round.

We understand why GM Steve Yzerman believes in drafting the best available player, regardless of position. The development process of NHLers is such that a team’s needs today could be far different in four years when the player gets to the NHL.

But Detroit’s lack of young center depth is at the point where it makes sense to start stockpiling some centers. If someone Yzerman views as a first rounder falls into the second round, it might be a different story. Teams’ second round historically only yield a regular 23% to 34% percent of the time depending upon your criteria for success. Why not throw your dart at a center? If you like three or four players for the pick, why not goes to the center.

And NHL teams do occasionally find scoring centers in the second round.

We’ve thrown out the names of Markus Ruck, Thomas Cherenko, Victor Plante, Blake Zielinski and Beckham Edwards as players worth considering. A national mock draft has the Red Wings taking University of Michigan center Adam Valentini.

Look no further than the Stanley Cup Final for historical precedent to finding centers in the second round.. Carolina center Sebastian Aho was an early second round pick (35th in 2015). Vegas Golden Knights’ William Karlsson, who plays both center and wing, was selected 53rd by Anaheim in 2011.

Other NHL centers picked in the second round: Dallas Stars’ Roope Hintz (49th in 2015), New York Rangers Vincent Trocheck (64th by Florida in 2011), long-time Columbus captain Boone Jenner (37th in 2011) and Nashville Predators’ Ryan O’Reilly (37th by Colorado in 2009)

Detroit’s 2024 first-round draft pick now seems ready to play in the NHL.
