While there was a bit of a stir earlier this week as Dylan Larkin’s trade list was confirmed by multiple sources to have expanded by one, the reality is that any trade for the about-to-be 30-year-old center is still quite a ways away.
Larkin’s list includes only one team who truly needs him, and the Red Wings don’t want to let him go for pennies on the dollar because he’s trying to force his way there. Instead, as the team looks to begin training camp in the coming months, head coach Todd McLellan is likely the busiest member of the organization as he plans how to deploy his team.
More specifically his forward lines, with the knowledge that it could all change at a moments notice and he could be dealing with a completely new top center on the team, if he isn’t already planning out a scenario for someone on the team to step up.
Around the league, things have slowed as some of the blockbuster moves like Leo Carlsson’s offer sheet have been resolved. There are still some restricted free agents out there in arbitration and negotiating with their teams, however, including Simon Edvinsson. The big Swede is due for a big pay raise, and there have been rumbling of teams sniffing around and considering submitting an offer sheet to Edvinsson.
Given Yzerman’s past history with his draft picks, negotiations could very well take the team deep into training camp on the matter.
One of Detroit’s youngest members has plans to return to Sweden someday.
Kevin Allen explains Yzerman’s math on any Larkin trade and why draft picks won’t cut it.
Former Red Wings litter the landscape of the offseason. Players to have suited up in the winged wheel waiting on contracts include:
Adam Erne, Petr Mrazek, Anthony Mantha (who had 30+ goals last year), Jeff Petry, Vladimir Tarasenko, Luke Glendening, Gustav Nyquist and Robby Fabbri.
And that list is just the players who didn’t register a game for Detroit last year. Most of the UFA’s from Detroit’s most recent roster also remain unsigned.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: After several offseason trades, Dan Kingerski explains why the Penguins need to start looking from within for improvements.
Florida Hockey Now: George Richards on why Lars Eller is the perfect fourth line center for the Panthers.
Colorado Hockey Now: Aarif Deen’s mailbag goes over the value Cale Makar brings to the Avalanche. Does that mean a record breaking contract extension?
San Jose Hockey Now: One of the Sharks’ top prospects switched his college commitment from one top NCAA college to another. Josh Frojelin has the details.
