If you came to Day 1 of the NHL hoping the Detroit Red Wings would start adding pieces to their anticipated Top Six makeover, then you are ended the night disappointed.
Forwards J.J. Peterka, Mason McTavish, Pavel Dorofeyev and Andrei Nichushkin were all traded Friday. And none of them ended up on the Red Wings roster. With the Dylan Larkin trade request clouding the team’s future, it’s fair to say the fan base is looking for something, anything really, that sends the message that they are taking steps to improve the situation.
Fans are waiting for them to trade Dylan Larkin for a strong return, trade for a center, re-sign Patrick Kane, make an aggressive offer to Columbus for Kirill Marchenko, hear that Alex DeBrincat plans to stay in Detroit and add a veteran scorer like Rickard Rakell or Bryan Rust or move Michael Rasmussen and Mason Appleton to make room for more physical players.
If they could start working off that checklist, fan morale would likely improve.
There is no indication that the Red Wings are close to moving Dylan Larkin. Maybe it will all start to happen today. Wednesday is start of the free agent signing period, although there’s not going to be much there.

Red Wings traded a goaltender to replace the first-round pick they traded at last season’s
Detroit’s first-round pick J.P. Hurlberg grew up as a Detroit fan. He will play college hockey at Michigan.
The son of a former Detroit Red Wings second round pick is a record-setting soccer performer at the World Cup.

Here is Detroit assistant general manager Kris Draper talking about Detroit’s first-round pick (No. 23) J.P. Hurlbert of the Kamloops Blazers:
“He’s scored wherever he’s gone. That’s obviously something that we liked. He has good size (6-0, 190). . . He’s a solid build. He shows real good offensive instincts, knows how to score goals. Can make playoffs. We were sitting there and thought this is a real good player to add to our prospect pool.”
Hurlbert scored 42 goals and finished with 97 points for Kamloops last season.
JP Hurlbert to Detroit.
No CHL rookie was as lethal as Hurlbert, who recorded 42 goals and 97 points with Kamloops. He’s an exceptionally skilled forward who, at one point, was so far ahead in the WHL scoring race that nobody was in the same area code.
