He’s gone from a nice rotational piece to worrying about keeping him beyond this season

I try to stay out of the CBA as much as possible.

However, I'm wondering how much the Suns can pay Gillespie next season using Early Bird Rights. I suspect, not nearly enough to keep him.

Maybe they can sign him as a free agent, but that would be tricky under the CBA with the tax aprons.

It depends on multiple things. I know they can sign him to 175% of his previous salary or 105% of the league average (whichever is greater.) I believe $12M is roughly the league average right now, so they can sign him to something along the lines of $12.5M/ year.

Tricky part is going to be avoiding the repeater penalties. I THINK they can avoid this by shedding a few million by the end of the season- for example trading Richards for nothing (other than picks) at the trade deadline. I am not remembering the exact details, but I do remember looking at this few months ago. It's super complicated with timing having to be done in a very specific way.

There are rules on this. Maybe @Hoop Head might have more insight?

The tax aprons and free agency figure in these decisions prominently.

We'll have early bird rights, meaning we can offer essentially he MLE to him without it counting as the MLE. It's actually a little above the MLE, like 115%. So we hold some cards. I don't think we can extend him though since we need him on 2 full years of deals here to get his early bird rights.

Only thing I worry about is Gillespie wanting a bigger role somewhere else. I think Grayson has built up positive trade value this year.

People are saying he is a little like Nash. His playing style (not level) reminds me a little bit of John Stockton. He plays with an attitude and a focused confidence. He is not the flashy passer that Nash was, but he works hard on D. G has physical limitations but seems to bet getting as much out of that body as he can.

I love his playing style and I especially love his confidence. He knows he belongs out there.

How good is Collin Gillespie? Too good not to have been wrapped up on a multi-year contract.

Hopefully the Suns fix it if given another chance.

Last season, he was on a two-way contract. This season, he is on a 1-year contract.

He is an unrestricted free agent next season.

I heard on a Kellan Olsen podcast, this is where the ghost of Bradley Beal kills us. The Suns will have to pay Williams. That will put us up against the aprons again. Trying to unfreeze picks, etc. That means the guys in the Gillespie range will be hard to sign if we don't trade away higher salaries like Allen and Oneal. Right now as it stands, we wouldn't be able to extend Gillespie.

I wanted the Suns to do it two seasons ago.

The Suns need to identify a young talent like Gillespie early and sign him to a multiyear contract (such as 4 years) with team options.

It's hard to feel sorry for them that they didn't. Brian Gregory even had a chance prior to the start of the season.

Bigger sample size now that he hit his 100th career 3P. Officially 100/240 (41.7%). Also averaging 7 assists per-36 this season.
