Last season we were working on what to do with Beal, etc. Plus, Gillespie looks like he really upped his game since last season. Most of it looks mental. He is more comfortable taking the three.

I was calling for the Suns to sign Gillespie to a multi-year contract nearly since they acquired him.

Again, the the smart strategy is to sign young talent before they blossom, not afterward.

Denver has to be kicking themselves.
From what I remember, it was a cap situation, whether it was luxury tax or aprons, where they had to make choices. Colin was going to be the odd man out. Not necessarily that they didn't value him.

Same with Brown.

Think he's priced himself beyond that. We might have to give him close to the max we can offer. Something like 12-13 million per year.

Player comparisons. Around the league some are seeing a bit of Nash in Gillespie. I don't see it. He is game not similar. G plays more pesky D, gets more steals, is not the flashy passer. Shooting is similar.

I see a bit of a John Stockton type of player--maybe even a little Jeff Hornacek--in him.

I think he's a hybrid of Dragic and Nash. Nash's athleticism, or lack there of, with Goran's fearlessness and ability to get to the rim. Collin carries himself more like Goran did when he returned also. He's playing with a chip on his shoulder and letting his game do the talking.

You sure you're thinking MMA? I don't recall a Kobayashi in the early days outside of Takeru who swallowed hot dogs like a wood chipper.

Yoshiro Takayama fits the bill of who you describe. He was a wrestler who had a legendary fight with Don Frye. Just gutted it out.

I think Collin Gillespie has some John Stockton and Mark Price in him. In regard to basketball IQ, some Steve Nash as well.

This guy is quickly becoming a core player. We need to lock him up long term
I don't know if we can, we're so limited because of the cap rules. At some point though, we are probably going to have to trade at least one of the Booker, Green, CG, Grayson group. I put CG there only if we can't lock him up long term.

The Suns will have to hope they can sign him as a free agent using Bird Rights.
Does anyone know what we'd have to do to lock him up better? Would trading Devin open up enough salary room or are our penalties still in place even if we drop a lot of salary? I'm not saying I'd trade Devin to save CG, I just want to understand what our options might be especially if CG continues to perform at this level.

Penalties are gone- the Suns are under the first apron. They can get Collin for about 13M per season using the early Bird rights, which is just short of the full mid-level exemption. There is no path to get under the cap enough to offer him more. All that I know for sure.

Now, I also believe they can give him a player option after the first season so they can give him more the next season once they have his full-Bird rights. Good news for the Suns is that only a handful of teams have actual cap space of even full MLEs.

Thanks, that's what I was concerned about.

I was so used to forgetting about the MLE because of our previous cap situation but we should have the full MLE next year if we stay under the apron, right? We could use that to re-sign Collin and wouldn't need the early bird rights. Even if we just used it for 1 year to get his full bird rights.
