As the NBA playoffs roll along, The Athletic published some juicy gossip. The national media outlet released its annual anonymous NBA player poll results. Players from across the league were asked their unfiltered thoughts on several prominent questions. In total, 158 players participated in the survey to varying degrees.
After a historic 68-14 campaign that saw them dominate the rest of the competition, it shouldn't be a shocker that the Oklahoma City Thunder featured in several answers. All positive, too. From the MVP conversation to who is the best head coach to play for.
There were a lot of interesting tidbits in the information-rich piece. Here's where the Thunder were featured in The Athletic's poll:
SGA is the MVP favorite
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander received 56.1% of 155 votes for who should be the MVP. That's a huge advantage over second-placed Nikola Jokic at 37.4%.
Thunder are a title favorite
This shouldn't be a shocker, but the Thunder are one of the top teams players predict to win a championship. The Boston Celtics were first with 57.7% of votes among 137 players. The Thunder were second at 17.5%. The Cleveland Cavaliers round out the top three at 10.2%.
SGA as a possible face of the NBA
When asked who the face of the league will be five years from now, Gilgeous-Alexander received some love. He tallied 10.9% of 138 votes. That was good for third place behind Victor Wembanyama and Anthony Edwards. A little surprising considering he'll likely win MVP this year. Chet Holmgren also received a vote.
Thunder are filled with underrated players
Plenty of players received votes from the 136 who participated. Cason Wallace, Aaron Wiggins and Jalen Williams each garnered 2.2%. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein and Isaiah Joe also each received a single vote.
Daigneault with a player-friendly coach reputation
Among the 147 players who answered who the best head coach is in the league, Daigneault was the runaway winner. He received 21.8% of the votes. Kenny Atkins and Erik Spoelstra were tied for second and third at 13.6%.
Players don't want to mess with Dort
Among the 141 players who voted for the player they'd least like to fight, Lu Dort was in fourth place at 2.1%. Only James Johnson, Isaiah Stewart and Steven Adams were ahead.
