LEXINGTON –Star tennis siblings Ethan and Cooper Remy are only distant relatives, but Hannah Remy knows that because of her last name she is going to be held to a higher standard when she has a racket in her hand.
So far she has cleared the bar twice in the 93rd News Journal Tournament at Lexington High School.
On Saturday she paired with former Lexington High teammate Alanta Hollister to win the girls 18-and-under doubles title. She made it two-for-two on Monday night, beating new teammate Cara Yetzer 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 (tiebreaker) for the 18 singles crown.
For the Remys, grabbing the headlines is no longer just an Ethan and Cooper thing.
Ethan, a 2024 high school state doubles champ for Lex, won men’s singles that summer in the News Journal by beating his younger brother in the finals. Cooper played No. 1 for Lex this past spring, leading the Minutemen to their 18th Final Four appearance in the state team tournament.
So Hannah understands the responsibility that comes with being associated with her second cousins.
“There’s a lot of pressure, yeah,” she said, smiling. “You definitely want to do good. I don’t know how to describe it, but you want to do good and represent the Remy family well.”
Hannah and Cara have hit together quite a bit the last two years at Lakewood Racquet Club. They’ll become even more familiar with each other’s game as high school teammates for the first time this fall.
Cara knows what she would do differently if she got another crack at Hannah.
“I probably wouldn’t try to hit it so deep in the court because that didn’t work out too well,” she said about overhitting the baseline. “I was hitting the ball too hard.”
Cara will be a freshman at Lex and Hannah will be a junior, ascending to the No. 1 spot in the varsity lineup. Last year she played No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles, with Lily Thomas, for the reigning Ohio Cardinal Conference champions.
First team practice is Aug.3.
“I definitely feel I need to prepare more for the season, but I’m working my way up there,” Hannah said. “I’m pushing the ball more, trying to get more height over the net, which is good in singles for rally balls.”
After winning the first set easily, Hannah saw Cara completely flip her fortunes in the second set. To get back on track for the decisive 10-point tiebreaker, Hannah remembered what had worked well in that situation in the past.
“I’ve been in a lot of tiebreakers and I always try to take the lead right away so I can have a little breather,” she said. “I can relax, have fun and play my game.”
Hannah jumped out to a 5-1 lead in this ’breaker and was able to hold on.
“In the second set my timing was off on every shot,” she said. “I got down on myself, but once I got a point (in the tiebreaker) I got more hyped and told myself, ‘Ok, you can do this.’ I tried to be more encouraging to myself and not get down on myself.
“She was hitting her shots, I was hitting some pretty good shots. I don’t know … I pulled through somehow.’
There have been two other finals so far this week. On Sunday, Rocco Palmer beat Jace Painey 8-7 for the boys 10 singles title. In Monday’s other championship match, Joey Galuzny beat Nico Palmer 6-3, 6-0 for boys 14 bragging rights. It was a rematch of last week’s 12 singles final, also won by Joey.
