The Texas Tech baseball team went from one game out of first place in the Big 12 to four games back, in the middle of the pack, in only three days last weekend. Not only were the Red Raidersswept at TCU; they suffered excruciating losses at both ends of the emotional spectrum.
First, the Horned Frogs blew out the Red Raiders, winning 18-8 in seven innings. Then they won the last two games by coming from behind in their last inning to bat: 10-9 in 13 innings and 5-4 in the series finale.
Tech (17-11, 4-5 in the Big 12) will try to get back on track in a home series against Houston (13-14, 1-8) at Dan Law Field/Rip Griffin Park. The games are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2; 2 p.m., Friday, April 3; and noon Saturday, April 4. The series is starting a day earlier than usual to avoid playing on Easter Sunday.
"The game's hard, right?" Tech coach Tim Tadlock said after his team's 15-4 home victory Tuesday over Abilene Christian. "Nobody's claiming that the game's easy. There's not a better example of that than what we just went through on the weekend. When you go through a college baseball season, you're going to have ups and downs, right? You're going to get punched in the mouth, and usually how teams respond to that is what makes it."
Houston has victories this season against three teams currently ranked in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll — No. 2 Texas, No. 16 Alabama and No. 25 Boston College — and a team that was ranked at the time, Wake Forest.
In conference play, however, the Cougars have lost two of three to Kansas State and were swept the past two weekends by Kansas and Baylor.
Three Cougars were Red Raiders last season: pitching coach Matt Gardner, catcher Dylan Maxcey and second baseman Antonelli Savattere.
Among Houston's top offensive players are right fielder Xavier Perez, batting .292 with team highs of 7 home runs and 21 RBIs; center fielder Tre Broussard (.419-3-19), catcher Riley Jackson (.264-6-16), third baseman Jackson LaLima (.253-5-14) and first baseman Carsten Sabathia III (.315-5-14), son of Hall of Fame pitcher C.C. Sabathia.
