Texas softball has earned its reputation as one of the most dynamic lineups in the nation. But as the Longhorns showed Saturday while securing an SEC-opening series win over South Carolina, their pitching is pretty good, too.
Starter Citlaly Gutierrez threw six scoreless innings, and Teagan Kavan came in to earn her first save of the season as No. 3 Texas beat the No. 23 Gamecocks 3-0 in the second game of the series. The Longhorns (21-1, 2-0 SEC), who won game one Friday 4-2, will try for the sweep in game three Sunday at 11 a.m.

Gutierrez may have secured her spot as Texas coach Mike White’s preferred No. 2 starter with a dominant effort against a dangerous South Carolina lineup. The senior improved to 4-1 on the season while allowing just four hits and striking out five. Kavan didn’t allow a base-runner in the final frame to secure the save.
Texas has not allowed more than two runs in 15 straight games.
For the second consecutive game, Texas couldn’t generate much offense against South Carolina ace Jori Heard. But the Longhorns didn’t need much with Gutierrez in the circle. Second baseman Leighann Goode broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning with a double that scored Kayden Henry, and freshman Hannah Wells added some insurance in the seventh with a 2-RBI single into center field.
