My nephew wanted to go on a hunting trip for his birthday and also wanted his Uncle James to come. So my brother invited me. We drove out here over a couple days and are staying for a clue days. The best time is in the evening so last night and tonight they took us each out to our stands. We all got one last night and my nephew and myself got one tonight.

I was a little hesitant as I am not really into hunting and I am not sure how sporting this was. But the hogs are a nuisance that breed to often and have no natural predator....and like I said, my brother didn't get one tonight and I almost didn't get one yesterday.

It was fun though. And I always enjoy hanging out with my family. Plus we stopped at Rosa's Cantina in El Paso...if you understand that you have great taste in music.

Nice! You bringing home hog to eat? I hear texas hunting is literally going onto people property and hunting animals stuck on the property. Apparently texas has little to no federal land and everything is privately owned. hear the hunting, offroading, camping and etc are all pretty much garbage but thats all the words of an arizona native that has no been in TX for 6 years.

If the hogs are killed cleanly and eaten I have no problem with it. I used to enjoy hunting but not anymore.

I once saw on television where they were chasing hogs with a vehicle or a boat but I don't think it was in Texas. They wounded the animals with a shotgun to slow them down before they were killed. Now that was a turnoff.

I had talked about a hog hunt a couple of years ago with a couple of my co-workers, we looked at both Texas and Alabama. Had a friend do the Alabama hunt, he said that the location they used sucked because there were way too many water moccasins and it was too dangerous to go in to the bush because of it.

I used to see some huge, ugly, hairy hogs in Georgia when I lived there, things were all over in the marshes on the coast and can get super aggressive.

What kind of rifle did you use for the hunt?

I am thinking about going on my first turkey hunt this fall in Minnesota. My brother in law has some great land for hunting (Jared Allen used to hunt on their land when he played for the Vikings). I've seen them running in the fields there when I visit--those birds can get huge.

My brother said he has seen video of guys shooting hogs from helicopters. I wouldn't do that....maybe just the helicopter ride. [emoji16]

The guy running the ranch took us with him to empty a trap on a neighbor's ranch. There were about 15 hogs in it. They were mostly trying to get away from us but at one point a couple charged at me from inside the cage. I have no doubt they can be nasty and kill a man.

The helicopter ride might be be fun but shooting animals from a helicopter, boat or vehicle is not hunting.

The hog population in Texas is picking up again. I have become aware that the deep freeze in 2021 killed a lot of wild hogs, but they are getting bad again. I was at South Llano River state park in the hill country last week and a private property adjacent to the park had a lot of hogs on it. I saw them from over a mile away as I approached from a hill and thought they were cows. when I got closer, I saw they were massive hogs, and they hid under a huge pile of brush. the sound from the brush was eerie, kind of like a deep rumbling sound.

If the hogs are edible and with all the hunters and guns in Texas, it seemingly should be a solvable problem.

one would think and I would prefer that they are consumed. but there are so many of them and they are invasive. if they get shot and left in the right area, other non invasive animals can feed on them as well.

The only thing you can make with hogs that's remotely edible is sausage, or a stew, of sorts. They're extremely gamy.

If so, I can better understand the situation.

Putting a bounty on them might attract hunters. Also, there might be a use for them as pet food.

If you smoke wild hog, low and slow long enough it is pretty good eating. With sausage you tend to need to mix it with other meat to make it palatable. I've heard carnitas are good but I haven't tried that yet.

Here in Florida we have swamp hogs, they can get pretty big...haven't hunted one here yet but I have a 44 magnum lever action ready to go when I get the chance.

I work for Texas Parks and Wildlife now. A lot of our state natural areas do public hunts. most hunters are interested in deer, but they are allowed to shoot and take as many hogs as they want. if they don't want the hogs we move them to areas where scavengers can eat them.

That seems like such a waste. There should be a way the meat could be made into some type of protein for feed.

possibly, but they are invasive so they have to be controlled. and scavengers provide a positive balance in our habitats.

I understand. Keep thinking there must be a better way.

there probably is, but they are very wild and populate very quickly. they are not easy to capture and when you do capture them they are not cooperative. they are one of the most combative animals I've seen when cornered. they have to be killed as soon as possible to prevent suffering. once they are killed they are also very difficult to dispose of. they instantly attract flies once they are killed.

If you needed to survive in the wild though, they would provide a source for that.

Florida has a similar problem with invasive snakes that were once pets but released to reproduce in the Everglades.

yeah Burmese pythons, I think Hurricane Andrew triggered that. Hogs were brought to the USA a long time ago from Europe, I think. of corse a lot of animals were brought from Europe and were not seen as a nuisance or an invader, like the horse for one. wild horses are protected in places like Nevada and other western states, but land owners are not always fond of wild horses either. indigenous cultures saw the horse as a gift from god. but hogs breed rapidly in very large numbers, so they have to be controlled. hogs also dig and destroy produce. in Texas we also have a lot of deer as well that are not controlled natural predators anymore. the main regulation is that texas is mostly privately owned and landowners lease out their land for hunters to kill deer.

Carp is another mostly unwanted species by fisherman.

We own horses and we also have wild horses near our home. Absolutely love the animals, but food and water is always an issue, as well for all wildlife.

Yep, they have a few hunts a year for snakes in the Everglades, it’s a popular event, haven’t done that yet either but mainly because I can’t find a hunting partner for that.

Also iguanas, they hunt those year round, no limit, another invasive species. A local company does an air rifle hunt from boats and they are really popular.
