As the start of the 2025 college baseball season draws closer, expectations are high for the Texas Longhorns. They have one of the deepest rosters in the nation, full of star power. However, two players in particular, Carson Tinney and Dylan Volantis, are making national headlines. On Friday, the talented duo were named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list.
For those who have watched Volantis and Tinney play, the honor comes as no surprise. The Golden Spikes Award is given annually to the best player in the country. Over the last two years the Longhorns duo have showed flashes of being that player.
Although Tinney has yet to make his Longhorns debut, he took his game to another level for Notre Dame during a breakout 2025 campaign. The Colorado native led the Fighting Irish in home runs with 17 while posting a team-high .348 batting average. Due to his play, the Valor Christian High Alum was one of three finalists for the Buster Posey Collegiate National Catcher of the Year Award.
While the Longhorns' newest catcher made headlines at the plate, Volantis was one of the best pitchers in the nation. He led all freshmen in saves with 12, and his 1.94 ERA ranked second. In conference play, the California native thrived with 11 saves, a new SEC record.
Even though the Longhorns duo is poised for big things, they do have the completion. The watch list included 53 other players. Players can also be added to the watch list throughout the season. If Tinney and Volantis can replicate their numbers from last year, they will draw plenty of support.
Adding to their trophy cases would be a great ending to the season for Volantis and Tinney, but they have bigger goals. Their focus is on bringing a national title to Austin. With Tinney serving as an anchor in the lineup and Volantis setting the tone on the mound, this Longhorns team is ready to etch itself into the record book.
