Texas A&M softball: Aggies rank No. 1 in the country for first time in program history

There is a new No. 1 in the softball polls, and for the first time in history, it's Texas A&M softball.

In previous weeks of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, the Aggies stayed within the top five and were No. 3 last week. The Aggies swept LSU, which was previously ranked No. 6, but is now No. 9.

ESPN/USA Softball polls also listed the Aggies at No. 1 after being ranked No. 3.

But the Aggies got a little bit of help on their climb to the top.

Texas softball dropped to No. 3 in the rankings after going 1-2 in its series against the No. 4 Tennessee Lady Vols; Tennessee is No. 2 in the ESPN/USA Softball polls. But the biggest help for the Aggies came in the form of Alabama, a team Texas A&M beat 2-1 in its series, upsetting the Oklahoma Sooners twice over three games.

Texas A&M softball is also No. 1 in the NCAA's RPI ranking.

The Aggies continue SEC play Thursday for a series against the Missouri Tigers in Columbia, Mo.
