Texas A&M and Texas head coaches comment on the ejection of Aggie first baseman Gavin Kash

In a tense and already emotional game, sparks flew in the middle of the seventh inning when Texas A&M infielder Gavin Kash got into a verbal spat with Texas outfielder Will Gasparino before heading back to the dugout.

There is some history between the two. Last season, Gasparino appeared to shove Kash, then playing for the Texas Tech Red Raiders, in the back after a ground at first base, causing both teams to clear the dugouts. Cooler heads prevailed, keeping the situation from escalating further.

After a meeting with the officials, it was decided that Kash would be ejected from the game and suspended from Game 3. A&M head coach Michael Earley was visibly upset, and after the game, he and Longhorn head coach Jim Schlossnagle spoke about the incident.

“It wasn’t instigated by Kash at all, “It was instigated by their center fielder. Our coach heard it. Because of that ejection, I’m going to lose the guy that I’m going to start at first base tomorrow. That’s a really tough thing in these games where the margins are so small. It’s really unfortunate for him.” - Earley

“I didn’t see it…I went to get a drink and I hear a bunch of barking which is normal, then I saw Kash yelling at the dugout. I don’t know who instigated that. Certainly, he played here and then went to Tech and then A&M, so I don’t know Gavin. I don’t know what the history is, but it’s unfortunate” - Schlossnagle

Per Travis Brown of KBTX, NCAA Rule 15.6.c states, a player cannot leave his position “to potentially participate in a verbal altercation or a physical confrontation (e.g., pushing, shoving, bumping) or a fight.” The positioning is determined by where the individuals involved were located when the incident began.

Texas A&M will close out the series in Game 3 on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. CT. The game will air on ESPN2.
