Rueben Owens enters the 2026 season as the experienced favorite after rushing for a career-high 639 yards and five touchdowns last fall.
But rising sophomore Jamarion Morrow has enough burst, confidence and support inside the locker room to make this competition far more uncomfortable than Owens might’ve expected.

Le’Veon Moss’ departure created the opening. Now Owens and Morrow are coming for every meaningful carry.
“We’ve got a lot of confidence in Rueben,” Elko said at SEC Media Days. “Rueben has had a really, really strong offseason.”
Owens’ path hasn’t been smooth. The former five-star prospect missed nearly the entire 2024 season, then returned to produce his best college campaign in 2025.
He’s a versatile runner who can contribute in the passing game, create in space and give new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins flexibility on third down.
This is also the biggest season of Owens’ Texas A&M career. Another injury or inconsistent stretch could open the door for someone younger to take his job permanently.
Morrow is already pushing through it.
The sophomore flashed during limited freshman snaps and strengthened his case during the Maroon & White Game.
Quarterback Marcel Reed didn’t hesitate when asked which Aggie could break out in 2026.
“I feel like Jamarion Morrow, he’s going to stand out a lot,” Reed said. “Next year is going to be different for him.”
Morrow brings a more direct style. He’s decisive, explosive through the crease and dangerous once he plants his foot and attacks downhill.
Owens may offer the broader skill set, but Morrow’s ability to hit a gap without wasting motion could make him ideal for an offense determined to establish the run.
That’s why this may not end with one traditional starter.
Elko could settle on a 50-50 rotation or lean slightly toward one player depending on pass protection, receiving ability and performance during camp scrimmages.

Freshmen KJ Edwards and Carsyn Baker, redshirt freshman Tiger Riden and Arkansas State transfer D.D. Murray provide depth, but Owens and Morrow are positioned to own the important snaps.
Texas A&M doesn’t need one back to become a superhero. It needs Owens and Morrow to make choosing between them nearly impossible.
