Texas A&M's 2026 running back rotation will be led by redshirt junior Rueben Owens and sophomore Jamarion Morrow, who, on paper, could end up being one of the more dangerous duos in the SEC, if, and only if, the revamped offensive line, now featuring four new starters, comes through. However, under new offensive coordinator and play-caller Holmon Wiggins, how much the running game will improve is simply unknown until we hit SEC play.
Still, after rushing for a career-high 639 yards and five touchdowns last season, including a career-high 142 yards vs. Mississippi State, Owens enters the most important season of his career after missing all but one game in 2024, while serving as the third option during his freshman campaign. A former five-star prospect with elite potential, Owens will compete with Morrow for the starting job, while it's heavily expected that both players will be utilized in a rotation.
This offseason, Texas A&M's 2026 roster, featuring 65% of the 2025 roster, 17 transfer portal additions, combined with the 2026 signing class, provides third-year coach Mike Elko and his staff more than enough talent to work with, even though they'll be replacing over 20-plus players, including a record 10 selections in the 2026 NFL Draft.
After Le'Veon Moss's productive, yet injury-riddled career officially ended after the 2025 season, Rueben Owens quickly became the name to know, placing more pressure on the El Campo (TX) native, whose play significantly dropped off last season, especially in both losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
Among the rest of the SEC running backs, SEC Unfiltered co-host Cole Thompson placed Owens ninth among SEC backs, which, in theory, is a great position to be in for a player looking to prove his worth, similar to Cashius Howell's 2025 preseason before the former Bowling Green transfer earned unanimous All-American honors after leading the SEC with 11.5 sacks.
Rueben Owens possesses the size and speed to become one of the top running backs in the conference, while his vision and quick decision-making after the snap are the areas in need of fine-tuning.
