The Houston Texans are shifting up the offensive line for 2026.

According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the Texans are trading veteran offensive lineman Tytus Howard to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fifth-round pick. The Browns are also giving Howard a new three-year extension worth $63 million, thus keeping him in Cleveland through 2029.

Howard, a former 2019 first-round pick, has spent his entire seven-year career with the Texans, starting in 93 games. He was entering the final year of his three-year extension signed in 2023. Throughout his time in Houston, Howard played four different positions, including starting at right tackle and left guard during his final season.

Entering free agency, the offensive line will now become the top priority to address in the offseason, even more so than initially planned. By adding and removing Howard from the roster, Houston is losing perhaps its most versatile linemen entering a prove-it year for C.J. Stroud. The Texans will now need to find at least three starters in free agency or trade before the draft, including two guards, a tackle, and perhaps a center. At least two of the team's current seven picks likely will be used on the offensive line, too.

According to Texans Over The Cap, Houston will save $18 million in cash savings, $4.22 million in initial cap savings, $3.21 million in net cap savings and roughly $23.7 million in dead money. Overall, the money saved will more so be used for freeing up space for internal options in extension talks.

Howard was entering the final year of his deal and had a $27 million cap hit. He likely wanted a long-term deal set in place, but the Texans likely weren't willing to budge on the current status of his deal.

Fans and media members were torn over the decision to part ways with Howard, with a majority calling it a terrible move for the offensive line. Here were some of the top comments found on social media following the trade.

Tytus Howard was always a class act. Despite getting moved around, he never complained about it. In his 7 seasons, he played on four playoff teams that won 4 playoff games.

I like giving Tytus Howard $20m/year much more than I would have liked giving Rasheed Walker $20m/year

Former #Texans OL Tytus Howard arguably had his best season as a Pro in 2025

He allowed a 4.8% pressure rate per Next Gen Stats. pic.twitter.com/MbVhPixrrb

Pretty wild realizing that Tytus Howard was a Texan for 7 years.

Tytus Howard going for a 5th-round pick and then getting a $21M/yr contract extension is a good barometer for the relative trade value of players. He's instantly the best OL in Cleveland (which much replace all 5 starters) and they got him for a 5th, per reports

Definitely seems like Houston traded Tytus Howard because they weren’t willing to give him that extension & he wasn’t helping the run game

But I would have valued one more year before letting him walk if I were them. His versatility made it a lot easier to reform their OL lineup

What was your favorite Tytus Howard as a Texans moment?

Nick Caserio is ADDICTED to trading away offensive linemen https://t.co/UK379HIHeB

I have no idea what the Texans are doing. Not only was Tytus Howard their best OL last season but he’s the last piece of functional familiarity for CJ Stroud from his rookie season. The season so many want him to repeat.

Then again Nick Caserio did say this offense was.. you… https://t.co/n3Nrz0zzkf

Sooo… Nick Caserio basically traded:

Tytus Howard
Juice Scruggs
4th rd pick
7th rd pick

for

David Montgomery
5th rd pick https://t.co/SqEXo5Kud3pic.twitter.com/niYv4yshVz

As surprising as the Tytus Howard trade may seem, I am not too shocked myself.

Andrew Berry didn’t even wait 24 full hours after the NFL Combine.

Tytus Howard has 93 career starts. Right tackle has been solved ✅

3/63m, $21m new money APY. I highly doubt Houston had that kind of valuation on Tytus Howard. Good for him to score a big third contract.
