The New England Patriots announced their 2026 coaching staff on Monday. By doing so, the team revealed that former defensive coordinator Terrell Williams will be the team's new assistant head coach.

Williams was initially brought on as the defensive coordinator by head coach Mike Vrabel last year, but he was forced to step away for a significant stretch after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. However, he still contributed remotely and stayed in contact with the team.

He eventually returned late in the season, cancer-free. Inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr took over the play-calling duties in Williams' absence and did a tremendous job filling in. The Patriots had one of the best defenses in the NFL under Kuhr's watch, which led to him earning the official defensive coordinator title.

This move keeps Williams, who has a great football mind, in the mix, while also promoting a talented young defensive coach in Kuhr.

It's a win-win for a Patriots team looking to build on its Year 1 Super Bowl run under Vrabel.
