When the Tennessee Titans decided to trade out of the 35th pick in the 2025 NFL draft in a deal with the Seattle Seahawks, they recouped the third-round selection that they traded away in 2024 for cornerback L'Jarius Sneed.
When they hit that spot at No. 82, they went defense and selected Penn State junior safety Kevin Winston Jr.
Winston brings veteran-like football instincts and IQ to the table as a run defender and could make an impact as a rookie. Armed with prototypical size, he is a downhill thumper who will set the tone against the opposition's rushing attack. He plays angry and arrives with a purpose.
Winston has shown the traits to be a chess piece in the secondary with the speed and athleticism to match up with tight ends and defend the seam. While he is still a work in progress in coverage, he could excel in Cover-1 or Cover-3 concepts where his physicality can help erase crossing routes.
The biggest question mark on his game is his medicals. Winston tore his ACL against Bowling Green in September and missed all but two games in 2024.
The Titans say they are comfortable and he should be ready for training camp, but this is something to keep an eye on moving toward the start of the season.
