Tennessee State basketball coach Nolan Smith, who led the Tigers to the Men's NCAA Tournament in his first season, has received a contract extension through 2031, athletic director Mikki Allen announced on April 7.
Smith, a former Duke standout player and assistant coach, led TSU to a 23-10 record and the Ohio Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships. That earned the Tigers their first berth in the NCAA Tournament since 1994 and just the third in program history.
TSU lost to Iowa State 108-74 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in St. Louis.
“My staff and I are incredibly blessed to continue leading this program,” Smith said in a release. “Last season, we laid the foundation and established a clear standard for a winning culture. We’re excited, motivated, and ready to keep building something that makes the Tennessee State University community proud.”
Smith was named the Ohio Valley Conference co-coach of the year along with Morehead State's Jonathan Mattox.
After the loss to Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament, Smith said he had no intention to leave TSU and looked forward to building sustainable success for the program.
“Nolan Smith has made an immediate and transformative impact on our program, leading with purpose, energy, and a commitment to excellence,” Allen said. “He is a winner whose passion for this university has energized our community and strengthened TSU basketball’s national profile. This well-deserved extension provides stability and momentum for the future, and we look forward to continued success under his leadership.”
Smith, 37, arrived at TSU after spending the 2024-25 season as an assistant at Memphis. Before that he spent two seasons as an assistant at Louisville.
