No. 1 Tennessee (23-0, 3-0 SEC) completed a three-game series sweep to open SEC play. The Lady Vols defeated No. 17 LSU (17-7, 0-3 SEC), 8-5, on Sunday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.

Tennessee tied its second-best start to a softball season in program history. The Lady Vols also started their 2007 campaign 23-0. Tennessee’s best start to open a season is 24-0 in 2006.

Erin Nuwer (10-0) started for Tennessee and pitched 2.1 innings, totaling 21 pitches (11 strikes) against eight batters. She allowed one walk against the Tigers.

Peyton Hardenburger also pitched one inning for Tennessee. She allowed three hits (one home run) and two runs (two earned) against six batters.

Sage Mardjetko was the Lady Vols’ third pitcher on Sunday. She recorded Tennessee’s first strikeout in the game during the fifth inning.

After trailing 4-0, Emma Clarke hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning for Tennessee’s first runs during the series finale. Ella Dodge also hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to tie the game, 4-4.

Tennessee's first lead of the contest was in the fifth inning after Maddi Rutan hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Saviya Morgan.

LSU tied the game, 5-5, after four consecutive walks by Tennessee pitching in the sixth inning.

After being tied for the first time this season entering the seventh inning, Gabby Leach hit a walk-off three-run home run for Tennessee.

Jayden Heavener (6-4) pitched 6.2 innings for LSU, totaling 157 pitches, including 92 strikes, against 35 batters.

The Lady Vols opened their SEC softball series against LSU with a, 5-0, win in Game 1. Tennessee secured a series win after an, 11-6, victory over the Tigers in Game 2.

The Lady Vols will next play Tuesday in the Midstate Classic at Ridley Sports Complex in Columbia, Tennessee. Tennessee will face Austin Peay with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EDT.
