I think it matters a lot. Intangibles do matter. I've been willing to root for lesser players simply because of their leadership abilities. That's when you start seeing voluntaries being packed with dudes and extra work being put in. We have a bunch of alpha dogs on this team.

Did a little research, and Bobby Bowden was voted an honorary team captain for FSU at the title game... and a 5 year old was named an honorary captain for Penn State. So, Keim's got to be eying those guys tomorrow.

I don't know about you guys, but I like team captain as an intangible a hell of a lot more than having moxie.

Being a team captain doesn't prove much on the field but it does show that you were liked, or at least respected by your teammates. How much value that has in the NFL, I don't know.

That's some good info right there, thanks for sharing. Also note that DC get cut because he was doing something stupid during the bye week (drinking and driving?).

My question is how many captains does a college team have typically.

Have you ever participated in team sports?

You don't get to be a captain without dedication, leadership, motivational skills and being a good player.

Being a team captain is an excellent measure for commitment to the team IMO.

One should not look at team captains as the only hard working/self motivated players on a team . If you are going to have a successful team , it will require alot of self motivated players .
