The Philadelphia Eagles returned to the practice field on Wednesday for their second mandatory minicamp session, and one of the more closely watched storylines involved the backup quarterback competition. This time, Tanner McKee worked with the second-team offense.
That development is noteworthy because much of the spring attention had centered around veteran Andy Dalton receiving those opportunities. Dalton's presence with the second unit sparked questions about whether the Eagles viewed the veteran as the frontrunner for the No. 2 quarterback job behind Jalen Hurts.
As it turns out, the competition appears very much alive.
Head coach Nick Sirianni recently stated that McKee and Dalton would rotate reps moving forward, and Wednesday's practice provided further evidence that Philadelphia intends to give both quarterbacks every opportunity to make their case.
McKee entered the offseason as the presumed favorite after spending the past few seasons developing within the organization. Dalton, meanwhile, brings years of NFL experience and has been viewed as a stabilizing veteran presence.
Training camp and the preseason will ultimately determine how things shake out, but Wednesday served as another reminder that the battle for the backup quarterback role remains unsettled. For now, consider this the latest update in one of the Eagles' most intriguing competitions.
