talkSPORT confirmed that Brazil had been feeling unwell and was unable to continue hosting the live programme alongside Gabriel Agbonlahor.
He left the studio shortly after 8 am, with co-presenter Katie Shanahan stepping in for the remainder of the show.
A spokesperson for the station said that Brazil was “doing okay” and expected to return to air next Wednesday. The statement reassured listeners after Agbonlahor informed the audience live on air that Brazil had left due to feeling “a bit poorly.”
Shanahan later added that he was “okay” and recovering. The long-serving broadcaster has been part of the talkSPORT team for over two decades and remains one of its most recognisable voices.
From Scotland striker to talkSPORT icon
Before becoming a household name in radio, Alan Brazil enjoyed a successful playing career as a forward.
Born in Glasgow, he represented clubs including Ipswich Town, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United, while earning 13 caps for the Scotland national team. He was part of Scotland’s 1982 World Cup squad and played a key role in Ipswich’s UEFA Cup-winning side under Bobby Robson.
Brazil’s career was cut short by a recurring back injury, forcing his retirement from professional football in his early thirties. He transitioned into broadcasting soon after, first working in television before joining talkSPORT at its launch in 2000.
Known for his larger-than-life personality, humour, and strong opinions, he has since become one of British radio’s most enduring sports voices.
Although his on-air role has reduced in recent years, with presenters such as Laura Woods and Jeff Stelling sharing duties, Brazil remains synonymous with the talkSPORT Breakfast Show, a programme that continues to draw a loyal morning audience.
Brazil is expected to make a full recovery and return to the studio in the coming days, with the station confirming their wishes for his swift return to the airwaves.
