The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published an extensive report on the ending of the relationship between the Milwaukee Bucks and star Giannis Antetokounmpo, which led to his trade to the Miami Heat on June 22.

The piece, which was reported on for over three seasons by reporter Jim Owczarski, is available for subscribers but here are some takeaways of note:

Everyone had a hand in the trade​


While much of the discourse surrounding Antetokounmpo and the Bucks was about one party or the other not wanting to come across as the “villain” in the breakup, there assuredly are no heroes. From ownership down to Antetokounmpo, every major stakeholder in the relationship had a hand in its dissolution.

Mistakes were made​


The road to perdition was paved with altruistic intentions, beginning in the spring of 2023. While there was indeed bad luck along the way in the name of key injuries, important decisions made at important times ultimately led the Bucks to this juncture in franchise history.

Things became personal between Giannis and the Bucks​


The end of Antetokounmpo’s career in Milwaukee was an injury-shortened season in 2025-26 and it included a battle with the organization over letting him play in the final two months. It was the culmination of hard feelings built up by both sides during a disappointing 32-win campaign.
