COLUMBIA — South Carolina women's basketball will be without Agot Makeer for the second straight game and potentially Ta'Niya Latson again too.
Makeer was listed as out and Latson was listed as questionable on the SEC injury report published Feb. 4, ahead of the game against Mississippi State on Feb. 5 (6:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network). Another report will publish an hour before tipoff.
Latson was seen wearing a brace on her left knee at the end of practice on Feb. 4, in the same practice uniform that other teammates were wearing, including Makeer.
ESPN's broadcast reported on Feb. 2 that both were dealing with respective lower leg injuries. Coach Dawn Staley hasn't given much detail to the nature of either, standard protocol for her when it comes to player injuries.
Latson already missed three SEC games with an injury before this new issue appeared. The senior guard sprained her ankle on Dec. 28 but returned on Jan. 11.
She appeared to be healthy and fine in the first half of the win over Auburn on Jan. 29 but didn't play the entire second half.
After the game, all Staley said was that "She's not feeling well so we just decided to hold her out."
She's averaging 15.2 points per game for the Gamecocks after transferring in from three years at Florida State.
Makeer was making her second straight start in the Auburn game, as Staley has gone with a four-guard lineup, which brings Madina Okot off the bench.
With 6:18 in the first quarter, Makeer left the game and didn't return.
"She's in pain and that's a bummer but we'll get her back home and get her checked out" said Staley immediately after the game.
Makeer didn't play from Dec. 3 to Dec. 28 as she was in concussion protocol, and once Staley had her full roster on Dec. 28, Latson sprained her ankle.
Sophomore point guard Maddy McDaniel started on Feb. 2 against Texas A&M along with Adhel Tac so Staley could continue to bring Okot off the bench.
Staley's had six different starting lineups this year due to injuries, as Tessa Johnson, McDaniel, Okot, Makeer, Latson and Tac have all missed at least one game this season.
"The game is about adjusting no matter who you have, no matter if you have a full roster, it's about adjusting and putting our team in the best possible situation," Staley said Feb. 4.
