GHENT, WV (WVNS) – Two of our local club soccer teams are back in town after making names for themselves at nationals.
Soccer Summer Episode 7: Spain wins the World Cup, but keep watching soccer!
Legacy FC 2008 Black and the West Virginia Futbol Club 2010 boys both lost in penalty kicks during the knockout rounds of the United States Youth Soccer National Championships in Utah.
Before their heartbreaking exits, they were both taking care of business.
Shady Spring’s Micah Young was an assist machine for Legacy. Throughout the journey, they kept coming back to the slogan – “One Last Ride” – to remind them to keep fighting for their many seniors in their final season playing together.
“It is just a phenomenal team. So, I think it was a good opportunity to play with quality people and play quality competition,” said Smith.
Legacy lost in the semi-finals to a club from Wilmington, after going undefeated in group play. Goals came from all over the Legacy team during the group play games and the quarter-final. They needed an electric last minute goal to go to Penalty Kicks in the semi-final.
The Tigers’ Evan Rivera kept the goals flowing for WVFC, who reached the quarterfinals and became National League Champions in Tennessee. His team rose above the trash talk opposing clubs threw their way just because they’re from West Virginia. Rivera and WVFC let their game do the talking.
“I got a goal in the first game off a cross from Pedro Mattassini. I was a wide open player. Nobody marked me and I was just right there and I put it in,” said Rivera.
The second game started out rough, but the floodgates finally opened en route to a WVFC win. The next two games were losses, but Rivera and the team were able to take away some important lessons.
“Every team came to fight, but it was just all about staying together, staying positive, working as a team,” added Rivera.
Rivera had the privilege of playing club ball with his high school soccer teammate Andrew Bahr.
Rivera is a rising junior and Smith is a rising senior.

Together, Rivera, Bahr, and Smith are all ready to rock and roll with the Shady Spring Tiger Boys Soccer Team for Fall 2026. Smith tells us their main goal is to make it out of their tough region in AAA and show everyone what they got at states in Beckley.
