Syracuse, Gerry McNamara have inside track for 6-foot-11, 10 PPG transfer from SEC originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Syracuse Orange will have to be active in the transfer portal, just like every other college basketball team in the country.
It'll be Gerry McNamara's first time running the show at SU, and that could lead to a little bit of uncertainty for certain recruits.
For one, though, that might actually be exactly what he needs.
J.P. Estrella plans to be in the portal when it opens on April 7, according to On3 Sports. And coming out of high school Estrella was recruited by McNamara.
This might be an interesting one for Syracuse. Gerry McNamara was Estrella’s lead recruiter when SU recruited him out of high school. https://t.co/DNlPc7d87d

MORE: Bryce James transfer rumor isn't what it seems
Estrella was a top-100 recruit in the Class of 2023, finishing his high school career at Brewster Academy, which the Orange have recruited well from in the past.
He has spent all three of his college seasons with the Volunteers under Rick Barnes, and this season was his best. He averaged 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while shooting 59.6% from the floor.
Estrella was on the bench in a sweatsuit when Tennessee was surprisingly upset by the Orange at the JMA Wireless Dome early in the season.
He was impactful most of the rest of the season in what was a crowded interior group for the Vols.
Now, he's looking for bigger opportunity, and he could find it with a familiar face in Syracuse.
