Gerry McNamara can target 7-foot-9 transfer cheat code for Syracuse return to 2-3 zone originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
If Gerry McNamara wants to return fully to his Syracuse roots and bring back the 2-3 zone, there's one fascinating player who just entered the transfer portal that could be worth a look.
Olivier Rioux is 7-foot-9, and now he's available.
Rioux plans to enter the transfer portal, according to college basketball insider Jeff Goodman.
Rioux spent the past two seasons with the Florida Gators. He redshirted for last year's national championship team, and he got into 11 games this season.
The big fella played a total of 16 minutes in 2025-26, making 3-of-6 field goals and 1-of-2 free throws for 7 points. He also had 6 rebounds, an assist, a turnover and two fouls.
Rioux isn't necessarily the classic kind of center that Jim Boeheim put in the middle of his zone, but with small scheme alterations, the Orange could make this work in a fascinating way.
Boeheim often counted on his centers to rotate out to the corners when the defense got pulled up toward the top of the key. Rioux maybe wouldn't be fit to do that.
But if the zone stays just a tad deeper, Rioux can stay on the interior with unmatched length.
He's the tallest player to ever score a basket in college basketball history, after all. This would be fascinating.
It's not clear if Syracuse would be interested. When Rioux was in high school, the only other high-major school to pursue him was Nebraska, and according to 247Sports, the Cornhuskers didn't even actually offer Rioux a scholarship.
Rioux may end up at a much smaller program to try and give his career a jolt.
But if McNamara wants someone unlike anyone else in the sport, he could give Rioux a call.
