Sycamore women in first after Day 1 of MVC Indoor Track Championships

Indiana State made strong start to the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships at Indianapolis' State Fairgrounds, with the Sycamores leading the women’s standings and in contention for a high finish on the men’s side.

Amy Luttrell and Janiya Bowman won gold MVC honors in the pole vault and long jump, respectively.

Bowman broke the school record with her second straight MVC Indoor event championship. Ellie Irwin added all-conference honors in both the high jump and pentathlon, while the women’s distance medley relay team, Aliseonna Garnett and Niesha Anderson all picked up all-MVC accolades on the opening day for ISU.

The Sycamore women hung on to clinch the title on Monday with a score of 152 while the men finished third with a score of 109. Junior Aliseonna Garnett finished first in the women's shotput with a throw of 16.32 meters. Also finishing first for the women was sophomore Reneisha Andrews in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.36. Sophomore Jahnel Bowman snagged a first place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 12.56 meters.

Men — Northern Iowa 76.5, Illinois State 54.5, Drake 27, Indiana State 23, Belmont 20, UIC 18, Bradley 9, Southern Illinois 4, Valparaiso 2, Evansville 0.

Women — Indiana State 75, Northern Iowa 57, Illinois State 46.5, Murray State 36.5, Drake 19, Bradley 18, Southern Illinois 9, Belmont 8, UIC 3, Evansville 1, Valparaiso 0.

Sunday's ISU MVC champions — Amy Luttrell pole vault (13-4.5); Janiya Bowman long jump (20-2.25).

Sunday's ISU All-Conference — Gnister Grant, Kyarra DeGroote, Hallie Mimbela, Halle Miller distance medley relay (third, 11:47.92); Ellie Irwin high jump (second, 5-6.5), pentathlon (third, 3610); Noah Gilmore high jump (third, 6-7.5); Aliseonna Garnett weight throw (64-6.5); Niesha Anderson weight throw (third, 64-0.25).

Monday's team scores
