Indiana State heads into the Missouri Valley Conference baseball tournament with a No. 2 seeding and plenty of individual honors, including Sycamore outfielder Carter Beck receiving the MVC's Joe Carter Player of the Year award.
The Valley announced the honors Tuesday.
Beck and the Sycamores head to Murray, Ky. At 4 p.m. Thursday, ISU plays either Murray State, Southern Illinois or Evansville, depending on the outcome of Wednesday's first-round games of the double-elimination tournament. It continues through Saturday. Coach Tracy Archuleta's team carries a 30-25 overall record and a 15-9 conference record into the tourney.
Beck becomes the first Sycamore to win the Carter award since Jeremy Lucas in 2012, ISU's only other winner of the honor.
Along with Beck's top honor, multiple Sycamores earned spots on the Valley's All-Conference teams. Those included All-MVC First Team picks Beck, third baseman Mason Roell and relief pitcher Colby Morse. ISU first baseman Nick Sutherlin and starting pitcher Ryan Karst both made the MVC Second Team, while catcher Caden Miller, outfielder Emil Estrella and relief pitcher Carson Seeman received honorable mention.
Beck and shortstop Nomar Garcia both selected to the All-Defensive team.
Beck received five first-place votes and 12 total points as voted on by the league's head coaches. The junior finished among the Missouri Valley leaders in batting average (.348), hits (80), RBIs (56), runs scored (60), doubles (17), home runs (14), on-base percentage (.448), slugging percentage (.622) and stolen bases (12).
A Carnduff, Saskatchewan, Canada, native, Beck had a team-high 27 multi-hit games and 15 multi-RBI contests has reached base safely in 54 of the team's 55 games played. Beck enters the postseason having reached base in 39 consecutive contests.
Roell finished second in the MVC in batting average (.372), third in on-base percentage (.483), and fourth in slugging percentage (.654). Morse finished the regular season with 25 appearances on the mound out of the bullpen, posting a 4-2 overall record and three saves, while recording a 4.39 ERA.
Sutherlin finished among the Valley leaders in RBIs (53) and home runs (nine), while adding 14 doubles over 54 starts. Karst led the Missouri Valley in WHIP (1.12), while posting a 3-0 record and a 2.34 ERA over seven starts in conference play.
