Get well soon, “Bane.”

Rising Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Welterweight prospect Andreas Gustafsson has reportedly been forced to step away from competition because of serious health complications, leading to his scheduled fight against Daniil Donchenko at UFC Baku next month (Sat., June 27, 2026) being scrapped.

According to Swedish outlet Frontkick.com, Gustafsson is currently dealing with major heart-related issues that “have worsened during training camp.”

And unfortunately, this does not sound minor.

Per medical documents reportedly obtained by Frontkick, Gustafsson has allegedly been suffering from “atrial fibrillation and recurring heart rushes” for quite some time, with symptoms intensifying despite the fighter being in excellent physical condition.

As a result, Gustafsson has now been forced to temporarily suspend his fighting career while he focuses on his health. The report also noted that people close to the fighter are hopeful this does not ultimately become career-ending.

Atrial fibrillation — commonly referred to as A-fib — is an irregular heart rhythm that can severely impact cardiovascular performance and endurance. In combat sports, where elite conditioning is everything, unpredictable heart rhythm issues can become extremely dangerous inside the cage.

For professional fighters, symptoms like sudden heart racing, dizziness, fatigue, and breathing issues can quickly become life-threatening during intense physical exertion.

Thankfully, it appears Gustafsson caught the issue before something catastrophic happened during competition.

Gustafsson (12-3) has quickly become one of Sweden’s more intriguing UFC fighters since earning his contract on Contender Series.

The hard-nosed Welterweight made a huge impression in his UFC debut by completely overwhelming Khaos Williams across three rounds to score a dominant, lopsided unanimous decision victory. However, his momentum took a hit when he suffered a brutal 54-second knockout loss to Rinat Fakhretdinov at UFC Paris last year (watch highlights).

Now, the focus is no longer on rankings or fights — it is simply about getting healthy.

Heart issues are obviously not something to mess around with in professional sports, especially in a sport as physically demanding as MMA.

Hopefully “Bane” can get everything under control and eventually make a safe return to competition.
