So, point guard is an issue for the Suns, but trading for a marginal back up pg does not seem to help. Here are our options.
1. Point Book. We have seen this before. Booker might be the best pg on the roster right now. But putting him there takes away the best SG on the roster, and the trade is a net negative.
2. Point Green. I see the value of wanting to put Green and Book on the floor together. He has the handles to bring the ball up, and could initiate an offense depending on how pg dependent the offense is. The most important thing for this team will be running. We need to move the ball quickly with this younger more athletic team. Green is not a distributor so far and the idea that he could be effective in that role is more hope than realistic expectation.
3. Collin Gillespie. He seems to be the closest thing to a traditional pg on the roster. He is a bit limited defensively. He went 15/6/6 per 36 for the Suns last year with 42% 3 point shooting. Per36 stats are deceiving sometimes, but that is interesting. This seems to be an option that should be explored.
4. Jordan Goodwin. He really does not have good distributing skills but would be a defensive dog at the pg position. He is a better rebounder than passer.
5. Jared Butler's per 36 numbers are really interesting, especially since he got those numbers over more actual minutes played. 17/7.3/3.6 with 35.2% three point shooting. That percentage is not great but not bad. He also seems to be a decent defender.
I guess we give the Book/Green backcourt a look. But if it becomes clear we need more of a pg, then I would guess Gillespie and Butler would Duke it out for minutes and Book would move to SF. The problem with that is that we have Dunn, Flemming, Hayes, Brooks, and ONeal that would need time at the forward positions.
Any predictions?
