Reports out of Boston is that the deal is dead.

Reportedly, the Suns were just offering the trade exception, and not a 2nd round pick. I guess Ainge was holding out for a pick.

That doesn't make any sense.

The Suns use second round picks to wipe their butts.

I agree, it doesn't make any sense.

However, it's on several Celtics message boards that 1510 a.m (a sports radio station I must assume) has reported that the deal is off the table for now, as the Suns were only offering the trade exception from the Zarko deal.

Celtics fans are just as puzzled as we are.

McCarty can't really get minutes on the Celtics right now.

Why give up picks for him? I'd rather wait longer until the deadline to see what we can get for the exception and/or picks.

Would McCarty make much of a difference for the Suns?!?

What do you think we would get for a second rounder? With the Suns he would fit in very nicely

Anyone know the movie State and Main? A second-round pick is like an associate producer credit.

I bet the Suns are working on some other trades.

If they can't get anything better they will make the deal for McCarty.

It is almost like the roster move is a bigger deal than the 2nd round pick, IMO anyway.

We don't want to make a deal for McCarty if we can get something better.

This team gives away 1st round picks like they're going out of style when trying to get cap space or under the luxury tax. Then they get stingy with a late 2nd trying to acquire veteran bench help??

Not that it's anything major, but I don't understand this one.

That's funny.

However, if you think about it, at least one second round pick each year ends up turning into a pretty good player. The more picks you have, the better your chances of getting him. It's slim, but you never know.

2004
Obviously too early, but Duhon and Varejão already look like good contributors.

2003
Luke Walton, Willie Green, Kyle Korver

2002
Carlos Boozer, Dan Gadzuric, Ronald Murray, Rasual Butler

2001
Gilbert Arenas, Mehmet Okur, Earl Watson, Bobby Simmons

2000
Marko Jaric, Eduardo Najera, Michael Redd, Brian Cardinal
(I'm intentionally leaving out Jake Voskuhl)

1999
Gordon Giricek, Todd MacCulloch, Lee Nailon, Manu Ginobilli

1998
Ruben Patterson, Rashard Lewis, Cuttino Mobley, Rafer Alston

1997
Tough year. Marc Jackson, Stephen Jackson(waived though), Peja Drobnjak

1996
Othella Harrington, Moochie Norris, Jeff McInnis, Malik Rose, Shandon Anderson

1995
Andrew Deqlerc, Eric Snow, Fred Hoiberg

There seems to have been more in the past few years. I think that some ready contributors have been pushed into the second round by "upside" from high school and Europe.

How many of those players are still with the team that drafted them though?

Not many I'd guess.

I don't think some of those names are worthy of inclusion, so let's call it an average of three players for year. With 30 teams drafting, that means 10% of all second-round picks amount to something. And even when they do amount "something," that something is very often "not much."

If I have a choice between Walter McCarty now or a 10% chance of landing the next Luke Walton, I'm taking McCarty.

The Suns are waiting to see who else is available, I guess. Either that or Ainge is holding out for the best of the Suns' second-round picks.

I agree that it's strange the deal would fall through.

McCarty seems like a solid selection - 2nd Rounder? LOL Don't the Suns have: Magic's, Warriors', Bulls', Future Cavs', etc... I'd probably make that Trade.

Second, the Trade would drop the need for a PF next year and with Jim Jackson, the need for a G/F in Draft. Suns could Draft a PG or C :D

Francisco Garcia's playing right now though on ESPN if any are interested though, although 1 of the many PG's are now are on my Draft List...

maybe, but just maybe, this is about Walter's player option for next year.
maybe, well surely we do not want to lose those 1.5 (or whatever) mil in cap room. And walter was really looking forward to playing for the suns, so he'd probably was going to pick it up

I haven't seen a lot of Walter McCarty, but if anyone has, would it be safe to say he's kind of a poor man's Robert Horry?

Either way, this is another low risk trade for some much needed veteren depth. I cant complain.

hmm, not as athletic as horry was in his younger days, and not quite the defender. but a good, long player who likes to run. comes from his days at kentucky. he'd an excellent addition off the bench. particularly for a second rounder.

Maybe my memory is bad, but I didn't think that defense was one of McCarty's strong points at all. I thought he was best at hitting those open three-point shots. This really doesn't bother me at all if it fell through.

Looks like McCarty has minutes in Boston now, as Jefferson went down with an injury.

My Guess is that Ainge wanted the second rounder from GS. I dont really think McCarty is worth that one.

What would the Suns do with a high second round pick?

Draft Smokey Vroman?

That pick only has value to the Suns as a trading card. Unless they have another player in mind the deadline is about 3 weeks away.

I like the bobblehead theory better.

We won't have any cap room this summer with or without McCarty.

i think steve smith might be a little better pickup. he's makin vet min and i dont think he's under contract next season, so we wouldnt have to worry about him after the end of this season.

Have to disagree, Steve Smith can't run anymore and we don't need another guard unless it is a pass first point guard.

McCarty would be a better choice than Smith IMO.
