Blurb in the Republic has the Suns interested in Walter McCarty. That's the kind of minor deal I think makes sense--won't take much to get him, he'd fit right in behind Marion as an undersized pf, is a decent player. I have no idea how much he makes, but it can't be that much.

Payton makes 5.4 million don't think I would be willing to give up Nash or Q for him. McCarty signed a three year deal with Boston in 03 for 4.1million so he should be only making 1.3 per year. Then the Suns could use the Zarko exception to pick him up.

Selected by the New York Knicks in the first round (19th pick overall) of the 1996 NBA Draft ... Traded by the Knicks with Dontae' Jones, John Thomas, Scott Brooks and two future second-round draft choices to the Boston Celtics for Chris Mills on 10/22/97 ... Re-signed by the Celtics on 8/9/02.

McCarty never was with Cleveland. NYK and BOS

It was just a quick mention on azcentral....

• We don't think the Suns are done yet with their roster tweaking. We hear they may want to make a move before the trading deadline for another big, athletic guy but not the names you've heard. We hear they like Boston's Walter McCarty if they go for a "big." They play at Boston Friday. If they don't go for McCarty, the Suns are likely to shop for another shooter.

McCarty signed a three year deal with Clev. in 03 for 4.1million so he should be only making 1.3 per year. Then the Suns could use the Zarko exception to pick him up.

It's almost a perfect fit financially. But McCarty is pretty popular in Boston. This is his eighth season with them, so I doubt they'd dump him just to save money.

Also, I confess I have watched him play only a little, but he sure doesn't look like much of a defender, even by Suns standards. His rebounding and block numbers are awful. Even over the past two full seasons, when he was getting 24 minutes a game, he averaged barely three rebounds and not even a third of a block.

He reminds me alot of Walt Williams pure shooter and nothing else. But he is also a husle guy who could at least help the Suns bench plus if we need D or rebounds we can bring in Bo.

question on the zarko exemption. can it be packaged along with players for someone?

The Walt Williams comparison is not bad, except Walt was about two inches shorter, not as good a shot, but could pass like a point guard.

I like McCarty. He's an ideal 7th or 8th man off the bench and can theoretically play three positions. Great role player.

The downside is this team probably needs defense coming off the bench. Usually it's defensive teams that have pure offensive players coming off the bench.

HoopsHype doesn't have his salary listed, but Patricia's web site has him at a little over $1.3 million this season.

http://www.nationwide.net/~patricia/misc/salaries05.txt

It says that his contract goes through 2006, but he has a player's option after this season.

http://www.nationwide.net/~patricia/contracts

I thought McCarty was a great three-point shooter, but his career average is 34.9%. His career field-goal average is 39.5%. I'm not sure the Suns need another guy who shoots like Quentin Richardson.

then why havent we looked into getting payton from boston. last i heard (although it was a long time ago) is that he doesnt want to play there. since his contract is expiring after this year, he most likely wont return, so why doesnt boston trade him for something.

he would fill a whole at the PG position, and he is big enough to give us some time at the 2 if needbe. with his contract coming off the books at the end of the season he'd give us a little cap flexability, which we could use to either resign him for cheaper or go after someone else.

essentially on the suns side of the trade it would be JJ/Voskul/Barbs/Zarko exemption/maybe our chi pick for Dalembert and Payton. Philly and Boston would play more of a major role with eachother with some of their big contracts moving around.

Payton is a cancer and will only play if he is a starter he will not start in PHX.

He will not play the 2 for the Suns and why would you want to take time from Q,JJ or JJ2?

Payton is not worth that much and we are not looking to blow up the team again. We didn't trade JJ for Tmac why would we do it for a washed up PG who is a cancer?

I think this is the most anyone has talked about Walter McCarty in his career.

The first couple years he was not much of a player, but has worked and developed a decent shooting game. Tall and lanky and not sure he plays defense. He really is built like Paul Shirley and has about the same game. I do not know if Shirley is as good a player as McCarty, but am not sure McCarty is a good player either.

I think McCarty is a solid role player and would be a nice addition to the Suns.

Now oly if we could trade a couple of second round pick for him. :)

Actually, I think Payton would be a super addition. He could easily find 20 minutes a game even when Nash is healthy, and he'd get a lot more than that the next time Nash is hurt. Furthermore, I think Payton could be happy in Phoenix for what's left of this season. He'd have an important role on a team with championship hopes.

However, the Suns just don't have the salaries to make it work, so it's a moot point.

I'd love to see Walter in the Suns uniform, but we already have Q, Johnson, Marion, and Jimmy Jackson. I am more interested in a pure point guard.

The note in the paper said the suns like McCarty, maybe they like him so they can use him on a trade for Dalembert?

O'Brien was the coach in Boston, and maybe he wants a big man in any deal that he would make for Dalembert, and he may like McCarty.

Exactly

The Suns don't have the salaries to make any deal for an experienced player.

The best I can imagine would be:

Voskuhl 1.7
Zarko exception 1.3
and Bo? 1 million

for a total of $4million we could take in return. But that would be a really crappy thing to do to Bo.

Of course this would be for an experienced big that someone wants to unload.
